A premium hospitality facade project in the heart of Edinburgh, Virgin Hotel features Total Stone supported on the PF-ALU-HPL system. The specification combines 40mm thick flat panels with 60mm thick panels incorporating rustication joints, alongside solid masonry stone piers, helping create a robust and high-end external finish that suits the character of a flagship hotel within the city’s historic centre.
With a project size of 1,600m²+, the scheme represents a substantial facade installation and highlights the use of contrasting panel depths to introduce relief, texture and strong shadow lines across the elevations. The project team included Balfour Beatty Ltd as main contractor, Procladd Scotland Ltd as installation contractor, and ICA as architect, bringing together the design, technical and installation expertise needed for a complex city-centre development.
A key feature of the project is the integration of solid masonry stone piers with the rainscreen package, creating a seamless transition between traditional masonry character and contemporary cladding. Carefully coordinated detailing and off-site fabrication also helped support accurate installation, maintaining strong alignment with windows, feature elements and street-level frontages on a constrained urban site.
